Hooded Eyes Tutorial

If you have hooded eyes, you may have found that applying eyeshadow can be a bit tricky. The natural shape of hooded eyes can make it challenging to showcase your eye makeup properly. But fear not! In this blog post, we will walk you through an eyeshadow tutorial specifically tailored for hooded eyes, along with some helpful do’s and don’ts to keep in mind. By the end of this tutorial, you’ll be able to enhance your hooded eyes with confidence and flair.

Understanding Hooded Eyes

Hooded eyes feature a distinct anatomy where an excess layer of skin folds down from the brow bone to the lash line, obscuring most of the mobile eyelid when the eyes are open. This unique structure can sometimes present a challenge for eyeshadow visibility, as the lid space is limited and the crease is often not visible. The key to mastering eyeshadow application for hooded eyes lies in recognizing these specific characteristics. By doing so, you can employ techniques that effectively contour and highlight the eye area to give the illusion of a more open, expansive lid space.

It’s also crucial to understand that hooded eyes come in various degrees of severity, with some individuals having a slight hood, while others may have a more pronounced fold. This variation means that eyeshadow techniques can be adjusted to suit the individual’s unique eye shape. For example, someone with a slightly hooded lid may not need as much contouring in the crease area as someone with a more significant hood.

Additionally, the way light and shadow play on hooded eyes is different from other eye shapes. Lighter shades tend to recede, making the brow bone more pronounced, while darker shades can make the eye appear deeper set. Recognizing these effects is essential for achieving a balanced, flattering eyeshadow look.

Understanding the dynamics of hooded eyes is the foundation for any eyeshadow tutorial tailored to this eye shape. With this knowledge, you can navigate the challenges of limited lid space and hidden creases, transforming your makeup routine to highlight the natural beauty of hooded eyes.

Prepping Your Eyes for Makeup

Beginning with a proper base is crucial for achieving a flawless eyeshadow look, especially for those with hooded eyes. Initiating your makeup routine with eyelid primer is a step that cannot be overstated in its importance. An eyelid primer not only ensures the longevity of your eyeshadow by preventing creasing but also enhances the pigment of your eyeshadow, making the colors more vibrant and true to their appearance in the palette.

After applying primer, a pivotal technique for hooded eyes is the use of a matte eyeshadow as a transition shade. Select a color slightly darker than your skin tone to subtly define the crease, creating an illusion of depth where the natural crease may be hidden by the hood of the eyelid. This step serves as a guide for where to apply deeper shades, helping to map out the eye look before adding complexity with additional colors.

It’s also beneficial to apply a thin layer of a neutral, matte base eyeshadow all over the lid. This not only sets the primer but also provides a uniform canvas for the subsequent eyeshadow application. The choice of a matte formula is deliberate; it minimizes the appearance of texture on the eyelid, which can be accentuated by shimmery shades, especially in the broad daylight.

Incorporating these preparatory steps into your routine establishes a strategic foundation tailored to the unique characteristics of hooded eyes. It sets the stage for a more controlled and precise application of eyeshadow, allowing for both creativity and the enhancement of your natural eye shape. By addressing the inherent challenges of hooded eyes from the outset, you position yourself for a successful and striking eyeshadow application that will last throughout the day.

Do’s and Don'ts

DO:

  • -Use a warm shade and bring it above the fold of your eye (this creates an instant eye lift)
  • -Keep your dark shade on the outer corner inside your brow and corner of the eye
  • -Apply a shimmer at the peak of your brow
  • -Use light shimmers on the lid
  • -Liner on your upper waterline
  • -Use eyeshadow along the lower lash line to open and soften the eyes

DONT:

  • -Only apply eyeshadow on the lid of your eye
  • -Bring your shadow past the corner of your eye – this will drag your eye down
  • -Use a heavy liner on the top of your lid
  • -Apply shimmer all underneath the brows – this adds extra heaviness to the eyes
  • -Waterline on the lower lid or use a dark heavy liner – this will make the eye appear smaller
